TOLEDO, Ohio - Seniors
Sophie Pohl and
Isa Echeverri each scored a goal as the Rockets advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 2-1 win over Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park. This will be Toledo's first semifinal appearance since 2012.
Toledo (10-7-3) cracked the scoreboard first with Pohl's second goal in as many matches in the 16th minute. Senior
Chiara Paradiso lined a left-side corner kick to Pohl at the near post and she delivered her fourth tally of the campaign.
UT out-shot WMU 6-4 in the first half, 10-8 overall, and was content with a 1-0 lead at the break.Â
The corner kick played a big part in the Rockets' second goal as well. On a Paradiso corner in the 54th minute, Echeverri was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Echeverri buried the try to the left side to increase the UT lead to 2-0. The Rockets took eight corners in total, compared to just three for the Broncos.
Western Michigan (10-8-1) cut the score in half with a goal by Alex Ruffer in the 89th minute, but the comeback attempt was too late.Â
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Madison Perrin made four saves, three in the second half, to record her 10th win of the year.
Toledo will take on No. 2 seed Ball State in its semifinal match at Kent State's Dix Stadium on Friday. Ball State defeated No. 7 seed Northern Illinois, 2-1, on to advance. The other half of the bracket pairs host and No. 1 seed Kent State and No. 4 seed Bowling Green.
