Toledo Shut Down by Miami, 5-2

Akron, OH – The University of Toledo softball team (21-32) dropped its first game in the Mid-American Conference tournament to Miami University, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Firestone Stadium. With the loss, the Rockets will play tomorrow, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. against No. 6 seed Akron.

First-team All-MAC selection Amber Logemann handed UT its first loss in nearly a month after throwing for all seven innings and fanning seven Rockets.

Senior Marla Gooding (18-16) pitched for the first four innings. Gooding allowed five earned runs, walked zero batters and struck out three.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings until Miami put three runs on the board in the third with a pair of doubles from Taylor Shuey and Johniann Wahl.

In the top of the fifth, sophomore C Kaitlyn Bergman reached on a single and advanced to second when freshman SS Megan Choate was walked. Kim Frank entered the game to pinch run for Bergman and scored the first UT run on a single by sophomore CF Ashley Rausch.

Miami slammed a two-run homer over the center-field fence to extend its lead in the fifth. Freshman Heather Webb (1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) replaced Gooding in the circle and retired her first two batters to end the inning.

Bergman was walked in the seventh frame and advanced to third on a single by junior DP Celeste Fidge. Bergman scored Toledo's last run on a Rausch's RBI groundout.
