Head Coach Cory Mee Picks Up Win No. 300 at CMU, 4-3

Mount Pleasant, MI – Head coach Cory Mee picked up his 300th career win in dramatic fashion, 4-3, at Theunissen Stadium on Sunday, April 24. With the win, the Rockets improve to 9-31-1 overall and 4-8 in the Mid-American Conference.

"The win means a lot because of the people that were involved in getting here," Mee said. "I've been fortunate enough to coach some outstanding players, work with some great assistant coaches and some great people associated with the program that helped get to this point. A lot of the credit goes to them and I am very thankful for that. I'm proud of our program for getting to this point."

Mee also knows what this win means in the MAC Standings.

"It was a big win for us," Mee said. "It was a game we needed to have and our guys answered the bell. I thought it was a really gritty performance."

Freshman LHP Michael Jacob earned the first win of his career after throwing a career-high 4.0 innings. Jacob allowed two earned runs and struck out one batter in the victory. Junior RHP Sam Shutes earned the start and allowed just one run over 4.0 frames. Shutes also fanned one during the outing. Senior RHP John Martillotta earned the first save of his career after shutting down CMU in the ninth inning.

While the Rockets only drove in one RBI during the contest, it executed small ball in the first inning that got UT on the board early. Sacrifice bunts from freshman LF Ross Adolph and senior SS Deion Tansel helped Toledo in the frame and were key in the victory.

"It was really important for us to get off to a fast start," Mee said. "We executed in the first inning with some bunts and put some guys in scoring position."

Sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger drove in the lone RBI on a sacrifice fly and also picked up a single. Martillotta picked up the only two-bagger of the day for UT in a 2-for-4 day and senior C Lucas Sokol also earned his second multi-hit game of the season.

After not scoring yesterday, Toledo responded with three runs in the first. Finkler scored the first run of the game on a Tansel sacrifice bunt, who reached on an error. Bollinger plated the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Adolph, and Tansel advanced to home on a wild pitch to make the game 3-0.

CMU cut the UT advantage to 3-1 in the fourth with a Daniel Jipping double down the left field line to score Zach McKinstry.

The Chippewas scored again the in the next inning when Alex Borglin doubled to left-center field to score Robert Greenman. CMU loaded the bases in the same inning but Jacob made a great play on a groundball to get out of the jam.

Toledo extended its lead in the seventh on an errant pickoff throw to bring home Tansel to make the game 4-2.

Ryan Heeke hit into a fielder's choice to score Daniel Robinson in the eighth, but CMU was unable to tie the game.

Toledo will be back in action on Wednesday, April 27 at 3:05 p.m. against Michigan State.
