Rockets Dominate WMU in Saturday Twinbill to Sweep Three-Game Series

Kalamazoo, MI – Toledo dominated Western Michigan in a two-game sweep on Saturday afternoon at Fran Ebert Field. The Rockets took game one, 7-4, and then finished the day with a 2-1 victory in game two. The Rockets now have a season-high five-game winning streak to improve to 13-31 on the season (6-11 MAC). The Broncos fell to 18-23 overall and 9-7 in the conference.

GAME 1
Senior RF Jessica Lemieux (2-for-4) led off the game with her third triple of the season and stole home on a Bronco throwing error on their attempted run down.

Sophomore C Kaitlyn Bergman (4-for-4) singled to left field, bringing junior 3B Brittany George (3-for-4) home and give Toledo at a 2-0 advantage. George had reached earlier on a double to center field.

The Toledo offense remained active in the third inning and extended its lead to four. Lemieux plated her second run of the game on a single by sophomore 1B Samantha Showalter (1-for-4). Showalter scored on a double by George.

The Broncos were able to get on the board in the home-half of the fourth with two-consecutive singles up the middle. Freshman RHP Danni Ryan entered the game in relief of freshman starter Heather Webb and WMU proceeded to score a third run on a wild pitch.

After senior RHP Marla Gooding took the circle for the Rockets, Western Michigan knotted the score at four with a sacrifice fly to center field.

George regained the lead for Toledo in the fifth frame with her fourth homer of the season. Lemieux stole her 27th base of the season and then drove in the Rockets' sixth run on junior 2B Chandler Rice's single up the middle.

Gooding hit a sacrifice fly in her third plate appearance of the season to bring freshman Kim Frank across the plate for the final Toledo run.

GAME 2
Western Michigan was the first to get on the board with an RBI double to center field.

Toledo answered back with single runs on a pair of sacrifice flies in the third and fourth innings. Freshman SS Megan Choate flied out to right field for UT's first run, and Showalter's fly ball to center field put the Rockets ahead to stay 2-1.

Gooding (11-15) notched the win in all three games this weekend by pitching 17.3 innings and striking out five with just one walk.

The Rockets committed just one error in the three-game series..
