Bowling Green, OH – Toledo (5-20-1, 2-2 MAC) took down Bowling Green (9-17, 0-4 MAC), 4-2, at Steller Field on Friday, April 1. With the win, the Rockets improve to 5-20-1 and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference.Â
Â
"We pitched well, had some at-bats that produced some runs and put the game together," head coach Cory Mee said. "I was happy with the performance today."
Â
Junior LHP Steven Calhoun picked up his second win of the season after throwing 5.0 innings while allowing just one earned run with four strikeouts. Freshman LHP Michael Jacob picked up his fourth save of the season after throwing 2.1 frames and only allowing two hits. Senior RHP Caleb Schillace also worked 1.2 innings in relief.
Â
"Steven was good and it was great to see him sharp again," Mee said. "His command was very good and that's the Steven Calhoun we expect to see every week."
Â
Offensively, senior 3B John Martillotta led the way after going 2-for-4 with one walk, one run and one RBI. Freshman 2B Riley Campbell went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks, and sophomore CF AJ Montoya picked up one RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
Â
Bowling Green grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third when Matt Smith hit a single up the middle to score Riley Minorik. BG put two runners on but Calhoun would limit the damage and keep the score 1-0.
Â
Toledo responded in the top of the fourth. After two walks and a single from senior RF Ryan Callahan, freshman LF Ross Adolph tied the game on a groundball and an error from the Falcon third baseman. The Rockets threatened to take the lead but left the bases loaded.
Â
Toledo took the lead in the top of the sixth. Martillotta ripped a single to center field to score sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger. Campbell extended the lead with a bases-loaded walk to give UT a 3-1 advantage. After BG recorded the final out of the inning, the game was delayed for rain for 1:40 minutes.
Â
The Falcons answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run of its own. Randy Righter hit a single up the middle to score Greg Basalyga and cut the UT advantage to 3-2. BG loaded the bases but Jacob forced a fielder's choice to get out of the jam.
Â
UT added an insurance run in the eighth. Sophomore CF AJ Montoya walked with the bases loaded to bring home Adolph and extend the lead to 4-2. UT loaded the bases with a single from Adolph, a walk from sophomore DH Brad Boss walk and an intentional walk of Campbell.
Â
The Rockets will finish the series with BG on Sunday, April 3 for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
