Toledo dropped the final game of the series with Duke, 3-2, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 1-9-1 on the season.
"I was proud of our guys for hanging in there all weekend long," head coach Cory Mee said. "We gave ourselves a chance to push across the tying run. We're on the cusp of putting things together."
Junior RHP Sam Shutes picked up the loss for UT after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs to cross the plate. Junior RHP Steven Duby, Freshman Michael Jacob and Freshman Casey Johnson all pitched in relief and did not give up an earned run.
"Our bullpen was great today," said Mee. "You can't say enough about how Steven, Michael and Casey pitched today. They put zeros on the board for us and really gave us an opportunity to mount a comeback."
Senior CF John Martillotta led the way offensively for the Rockets with one RBI and one double in a 2-for-4 day. Sophomore 2B Matt Hansen also picked up one RBI.
Duke jumped out to an early lead in the second as Evan Dougherty ripped a triple to right center field to score Ryan Day. Peter Zyla hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Dougherty home and give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
Toledo cut the lead in half in the third as Hansen hit a single to right field to bring home junior DH Jake Krupar. Krupar reached base after being hit by a pitch. The RBI was Hansen's fourth of the season.
DU extended the lead back to two with a double from Jack Labosky off the monster wall in left field. Duby entered the game after the double.
Duke threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but senior SS Deion Tansel took a hit away with a fantastic play keep the Blue Devils off the board.
The Midnight Blue & Gold answered back in the ninth. Senior RF Ryan Callahan ripped a double to lead off the ninth. Senior CF John Martillotta plated Callahan with a double of his own to cut the Duke lead to one. Martillotta moved to third on a wild pitch, but was unable to score.
