Toledo Falls in Home Opener to Buffalo, 13-7


TOLEDO, OH – Toledo (3-19-1, 0-1 MAC) fell to Buffalo (7-10, 1-0 MAC), 13-7, in the home and conference opener at Scott Park on Friday, March 25. With the loss, the Rockets drop to 3-19-1.
 
"I told the team that it's a three-game series, and today has nothing to do with the rest of the series," head coach Cory Mee said. "The guys will be ready tomorrow."
 
Junior LHP Steven Calhoun (1-5) picked up the loss after throwing 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs to cross the plate.  Calhoun struck out two and walked three batters. Junior RHP Steven Duby, sophomore RHP Jordan Kesson and sophomore LHP Alex Wagner all pitched in relief.
 
Senior SS Deion Tansel led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with one double, three RBI and scoring one run.  Sophomore LF AJ Montoya led the game off with his fourth home run of the season.  Senior CF John Martillotta added two RBI and freshman RF Ross Adolph also picked up one RBI.
 
"It was good to see some guys come up with some hits with guys in scoring position," Mee said. "Deion had a couple of big RBI singles."
 
Montoya put Toledo on the board in the first with a solo home run to left field to give UT a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo tied the game at 1-1 in the third with a sacrifice fly. UB added a two runs in the third off an Eddie Edwards III two-RBI single.
 
Toledo tied the game in the fourth when Martillotta singled up the middle to score sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger and Tansel.
 
Buffalo took back the lead, 5-3, in the fifth with a Vinny Mallaro infield RBI single and a Chris Kritzer RBI single.
 
UB busted the game open in the sixth with a five-run inning. The Bulls ripped two two-run home runs and hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Buffalo lead to 10-3.
 
UT added three runs in the seventh when Tansel singled through the right side of the infield to score Hansen and Montoya and cut the UB lead to 10-5.  Adolph also singled to score Hansen to cap the three-run inning for the Rockets.
 
Tansel cut the lead to 10-7 with an RBI double in the eighth.
 
Buffalo added three runs in the ninth to make the final 13-7.

Toledo will be back in action tomorrow, March 26 at 1:05 p.m. at Scott Park against Buffalo.
