KALAMAZOO, MI - Foul trouble and a season-high 24 turnovers sent Toledo to a 70-64 defeat at Western Michigan on Tuesday evening. The defeat means the Rockets (17-13, 8-9 MAC) need to win Friday's regular-season finale vs. Eastern Michigan (16-14, 8-9 MAC) in Savage Arena to host a first-round game in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Junior guard
Jonathan Williams topped UT's attack with 21 points, while senior center
Nathan Boothe contributed 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman forward
Nate Navigato also was in double figures with 11 points.
Sophomore guard Thomas Wilder and junior forward Tucker Haymond shared team scoring honors for the Broncos (12-18, 6-11 MAC) with 18 points apiece. Haymond also grabbed a team-best 10 boards and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Toledo posted a higher field-goal percentage, 46.2-39.7, than WMU and out-rebounded the Broncos by a 34-30 margin. Â Western Michigan converted 20-of-23 free throws compared to the Rockets' 11-of-13 totals.
The Rockets led 33-28 at intermission and started the second half strong with freshman guard
Jaelan Sanford's back-to-back treys putting UT in front, 39-30. Another trey from Navigato gave Toledo its first double-digit cushion, 44-33 with 15:23 to play.After Boothe picked up his fourth foul with 13:11 to play, Navigato buried another three-pointer less than a minute later for a 47-37 advantage. Garber and Sanford each then picked up their fourth fouls at the 12:06 and 11:54 marks, respectively.
WMU took advantage with a 9-0 spurt to close its deficit to 47-46 with 9:43 left. UT responded shortly after the Broncos' burst with a Williams' three-point play and a Navigato steal and dunk to lead 54-48 with just over eight minutes remaining.
Toledo then committed turnovers on four of its next six possessions to allow the Broncos to take their first lead of the second half, 57-56, with 5:45 left.
The Rockets had a chance in the final minute to make a late rally. Williams' three-point play with 28.9 seconds remaining cut WMU's lead to 65-64. Senior forward Taylor Perry hit two free throws for a three-point Bronco lead with 19.5 ticks left. Boothe was able to get a good look on a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, but his shot rimmed out with 9.6 seconds left.
