The Toledo baseball team wrapped up the Historic Dodgertown Classic with a 5-5 tie of Ohio State on Feb. 21, 2016 on field 2 of Dodgertown. Both teams agreed before the game to not begin an inning past 5:00 p.m. due to a flight both teams had to catch. Nine innings were played in the contest before the game was called.
"This was a really good college baseball game," head coach
Cory Mee said. "Both teams competed really well and I was proud of our team for playing so hard, especially after losing a tough one last night."
Sophomore
Alex Wagner (0-0) led the way on the mound for the Rockets. Wagner went 5.2 innings without giving up a run, and struck out six in the process.
Freshman
Luke Schaefer pitched 2.0 innings with one earned run and three strikeouts in his collegiate debut.
On the offensive side, four Rockets picked up RBI. Sophomore
Matt Hansen, sophomore AJ Montoya, senior
Ryan Callahan and senior
John Martillotta all plated one runner against the Buckeyes.
"It was really a great outing by
Alex Wagner," Mee said. "Alex threw all of his pitches for strikes and was mixing pitches well. It was a very impressive performance against a very good offensive team.
Luke Schaefer also came in and got a big out for us in the seventh."
Ohio State jumped out to an early lead in the first. The Buckeyes ripped a two RBI double and hit a sac fly to get a 3-0 lead on senior RHP
Sam Shutes (0-0). Shutes would pitch one inning, give up three earned runs and strikeout one.
Toledo answered back in the second. Junior
Josh Cales grounded into a double play, but brought sophomore
Matt Hansen home in the process to cut the lead to two. UT would storm ahead in the third after a sacrifice bunt from senior
Deion Tansel got the offensive going. Sophomore AJ Montoya hit an infield single to bring home a runner, and senior
Ryan Callahan ripped a single to center to tie the game. Another infield single by
John Martillotta gave UT the lead. Ohio State would tie the game in the eighth on a sac fly. UT would regain the lead in the same inning on a Hansen fielder's choice.
OSU tied the game in the ninth with another sac fly. The Rockets were unable to score in the ninth, and the game was called due to the time restrictions.
The Rockets are back in action next weekend for a four game series with Charlotte beginning on Friday, Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m.
