Charlotte, NC – Toledo's offense froze on the second day of games at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic in Charlotte, NC on Sunday. UT fell 9-1 to host Charlotte in seven innings.
"This was a learning experience for our team," said head coach
Kristen Butler. "We learned that every pitch matters and the first inning sets the tempo of the game."
The Rockets (1-2) were unable to generate much offense on the day and were limited to just five hits and one run in the contest.
The 49ers broke the game open with one run in the first inning and three runs in the second.
Danni Ryan (1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 6 BB, 2 K) was pulled after three walks and an error led to three Charlotte runs. Freshman
Heather Webb came in to relieve Ryan at the top of the second, but the 49ers managed to tack on a run in the fifth and sixth.
UT got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning but it was too late, as the 49ers had already taken a six-run lead. Freshmen
Megan Choate's double to center plated freshmen Kim Frank with the Rockets' lone run.
Senior
Marla Gooding came on in relief in the top of the sixth but struggled and allowed two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh on two hits.
Senior Jessica Lemiuex went 2-for-3 at the plate, while
Ashley Rausch (1-for-4),
Megan Choate (1-for-4) and
Samantha Showalter (1-for-3) each recorded a hit.
"All in all we had a good weekend," said Butler. "It was great to get outside and face some new weather elements. We were able to get our newcomers some great experience early on in the season."
The Rockets will look to regroup this week before they take a trip to Houston, TX on Feb. 19-21 for the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational.
