Williams' Career-High 29 Points Lifts Toledo to 73-65 Triumph over Detroit

TOLEDO, OH – Senior guard Jonathan Williams tallied a career-high 29 points and tied his career best with six assists on Wednesday evening to lead Toledo to a 73-65 triumph over Detroit Mercy in Savage Arena.

Sophomore guard Jaelan Sanford joined Williams in double figures with 18 points, with senior forward Steve Taylor Jr. registering his seventh double-double with 10 points and a team-best 10 boards.

Senior forward Chris Jenkins topped the Titans (1-8) with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Jenkins' work on the glass helped Detroit Mercy register a 43-37 advantage in the rebounding department, marking just the second time the Rockets have lost the battle of the boards this season.

The Rockets shot a season-low 30.4 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes but rebounded with a 48.3 mark in the second half. UT also took care of the ball better in the second half with 12 assists and five turnovers after intermission.

The Rockets (4-5), who allowed a season-low 65 points, rallied from an 11-point deficit with 16:35 to play to end a season-high three-game losing streak.

Williams and Sanford began UT's comeback with back-to-back treys to reduce Detroit's cushion to 44-39 a minute later. The Rockets weren't able to take the lead though until another Williams' three put Toledo ahead 57-56 with 8:16 left. Williams followed that with a layup on UT's next trip up the court and a pair of Taylor free throws put Toledo up 61-56 with 6:48 remaining.

The Titans closed to within 65-63 on a pair of Jenkins' free throws at the 3:18 mark, but UT responded by allowing just two points the remainder of the contest to secure the victory.

Toledo returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when it travels to Huntington, WV to face Conference USA foe Marshall (5-3). Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
