Toledo Runs in Great Lakes Regional on Friday

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals on Friday, Nov. 11 in Madison, WI. The women's 6k will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the men's 10k following at 1:00 p.m. Both races will be held on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
The Rockets are back in action following the Mid-American Conference Championships on Oct. 29. The women's team placed 5th with 127 points, while the men finished in 8th with 196 points.
The women's team will travel eight athletes including senior Theresa Warsecke, juniors Caroline Lambert, Petronela Simiuc, Stephanie Barlow and Maja Pacaric, sophomores Jennifer Lichter and Nina Bendixen and freshman Athena Welsh. The Rockets will select their seven runners for competition on site.
Joan Jepkirui and Pacaric paced UT in the conference meet with 18th and 23rd-place finishes, respectively. Jepkirui completed the 6k course amongst a crowd of runners with a time of 21:58.2, while Pacaric followed with a time of 22:03.3.
Barlow (27th place), Welsh (28th) and Lichter (31st) rounded out the scoring for Toledo.
Senior Thomas Gibbons, juniors Alberto Chelimo, Titus Koech and Stalline Kurgat, sophomores Louis Guardiola, Jacob Wistinghausen and Josh Oeters and freshman Dismas Koech will travel to the meet to represent the Rockets. The competing seven athletes will be chosen from the group.
Dismas Koech led the men's team at the conference meet with his 26th-place finish with an 8k course time of 26:16.5. Titus Koech finished second on the team with a 32nd-place overall finish and a time of 26:22.2.
Chelimo, Guardiola and Gibbons capped off the scoring for Toledo with 47th, 48th and 52nd-place finishes, respectively.
The first and second place teams from each of the country's nine regional races will receive automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships. Additionally, 13 teams will receive at-large bids to the national meet. The selection process will review regular-season competition along with the regional championship results.
The top four individuals from non-automatic qualifying teams will punch their tickets to the NCAA Championship, barring they finish in the Top 25 in their respective regional races. Two final athletes will be selected from a national pool to complete the 255-athlete National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19.
If the Rockets qualify as a team or individually, the NCAA Championships will be on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, IN.
