CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Toledo jumped out to a 26-8 advantage in the first quarter en route to a 76-60 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its season opener on Saturday in the American Bank Center.
The Rockets (1-0) were led by junior tri-captain
Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott with a team-high 16 points. Sophomore
Mikaela Boyd added a career-high 10 points.
The Islanders (0-1) were paced by Ashanti Plummer with a game-high 17 points.
"I liked the effort and intensity that I saw from our team today," said Toledo head coach
Tricia Cullop. "I thought we made some stops when we needed them."
The Rockets forced 10 first-quarter turnovers, leading to 19 points as part of a 26-4 run. UT extended its lead to 31-9 with 8:40 remaining in the opening half on a three-pointer by freshman
Sara Rokkanen. Junior
Jada Woody also connected on her second three-pointer of the game with 1:02 left before the break to regain the 22-point advantage at 42-20. The Rockets held 42-22 cushion going into the locker room.Â
The Islanders cut the margin to 15 points on multiple occasions in the third period, but senior tri-captain
Sophie Reecher tipped in an errant shot at the buzzer to give the Rockets a 60-42 lead after three quarters.
Corpus Christi scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to trim the Rocket lead to 12 points, the lowest margin since early in the first period. The Rockets answered the spurt with a 6-0 run, including a Bravo-Harriott triple, to balloon the lead back to 18 points. Corpus Christi would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
The Rockets used a deep bench to outscore the Islanders reserves, 34-15. UT had all 12 players break into the scoring column.
"We have a lot of players that we can rotate in and out," said Cullop. "It's nice to not have to play someone 39 minutes. We have a lot of players that can score and that will help with foul trouble, injuries and when someone gets tired."
Toledo shot 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the field and 9-of-20 (45.0%) from behind the three-point line to end a three-game slide in its season-opening contests.
The Rockets are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 as they host Rhode Island at 5:30 p.m. in Savage Arena.
