Toledo Utilizes Balanced Attack to Take Down Bowling Green, 75-61

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo utilized a balanced attack to secure a 75-61 victory over arch-rival Bowling Green on Saturday before a season-high 4,906 fans in Savage Arena. With the impressive home win, UT improves to 10-9 overall, 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference.

Junior Janice Monakana led a season-tying best four Rockets in double figures with 21 points. Monakana shot an efficient 7-of-12 from the field in the 74th edition of the "Battle of I-75", including a season-tying best 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to record her third-career game with at least 20 points.

The London, England native added a contest-best six caroms and a game-high three thefts to help lift the Midnight Blue & Gold to its sixth win in the last eight meetings against the Falcons (8-10, 4-5 MAC).

Senior Brenae Harris added 15 points, followed closely by sophomore Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott with 14 and senior Ana Capotosto had 11, as Toledo won its sixth-consecutive home contest.

Harris nearly tallied a double-double, finishing with a game-high nine helpers and only one turnover in a contest-best 38 minutes.

As a team, the Rockets shot a stout 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point land, and a blazing 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line to stop BGSU's three-game winning streak.

UT also did a good job taking care of the basketball against BGSU, totaling 16 assists and a season-low 10 miscues.

Lauren Tibbs paced the Falcons with 16 points, while Sydney Lambert had 13 and Sylvania native Myriam Justinger chipped in 10, respectively.

The Falcons exploded out of the gates and held a 12-4 lead at the 6:41 mark, forcing UT into calling a timeout. BGSU knocked down five of its first nine shots from the field, including triples from Lambert and Justinger, to give the visitors an early eight-point cushion.

The Rockets settled down following the stoppage in play and rattled off 15 of the next 21 points to assume a 19-18 lead at the end of the opening period. UT scored the last nine points in the quarter to go on top for the first time in the cross-division contest. Bravo-Harriott sparked the rally with a trey and a layup to give the home team a one-point advantage after 10 minutes. It proved to be an advantage Toledo would not relinquish.

The Rockets continued to play well in the opening minutes of the second quarter, taking advantage of an 11-3 burst to make the score 30-21 at the 5:53 mark. UT moved the ball well during this stretch and received field goals from five different players to prompt the Falcons to call a timeout.

BGSU retaliated with a 10-4 run over the last three-plus minutes to trim Toledo's lead to 38-35 at the intermission. Lambert continued to be dialed in from three-point land, hitting a pair of long-range shots to make it a one-possession difference at the break.

Toledo pushed the pace to begin the second half and utilized an 8-2 run to build a 46-37 lead with 5:27 left in the third quarter. UT once again spread the wealth and benefited from baskets by four different players to take a nine-point cushion at the midway point in the quarter.

UT's lead swelled to double figures for the first time, 60-50, in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter on the strength of a triple by Monakana and a layup from freshman Kaayla McIntyre with 9:03 left in regulation.

Moments later, Bravo-Harriott and Monakana put the final nails in the coffin with a pair of treys to extend the margin to 70-56 at the 5:14 mark. Toledo was not threated for the remainder of the game and did not let the lead slip below 12 points.

Three days after making 11 three-point field goals and shooting a stellar 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range against Eastern Michigan, BGSU was limited to four triples and 21.1 percent (4-of-19). Lambert was the one Falcon who did not struggle shooting the ball from the perimeter, knocking down 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc.

The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3 when they travel to MAC West Division rival Western Michigan (13-8, 5-4 MAC). The opening tip versus the Broncos is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in University Arena and can be seen on ESPN3.

UT will aim to sweep the season series against WMU for the sixth time in the last eight seasons. Toledo claimed an 80-73 victory over its division rival in Savage Arena on Jan. 9. A year ago, UT secured a 65-46 road triumph against Western Michigan in University Arena (Jan. 17).
