TOLEDO, OH - Toledo's amazing rally from a 22-point second-half deficit fell agonizingly short on Tuesday evening as Ohio (12-7, 3-4 MAC) posted an 81-79 victory over the Rockets in Savage Arena. Junior guard
Jonathan Williams had a chance to send UT fans home happy but his three-point shot from the corner rimmed out at the buzzer.
Williams and senior center
Nathan Boothe topped the Rockets (12-8, 3-4 MAC) with 21 points apiece. Williams tallied a team-high five assists and four boards, while Boothe grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for his eighth double-double. Freshman forward
Nate Navigato also scored in double figures with 10 points in addition to grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Four Bobcats scored in double digits led by junior forward Kenny Kaminski's 22 points. He was joined by junior forward Antonio Campbell (15 pts., team-high nine reb.), sophomore guard Jaaron Simmons (12 pts.) and senior forward Treg Setty (12 pts.). Simmons also set the Savage Arena record with a school-record tying 17 assists.
Toledo recovered from an ice-cold shooting effort in the first half to shoot 40.6 percent for the game. The Rockets converted 40.0 percent (10-of-25) of their three-point field-goal attempts, including 7-of-13 in the second half.
Ohio was red-hot from behind the arc throughout the contest, burying 14-of-27 treys (54.7 percent) for the most three-point field goals against UT since Feb. 14, 2009. That also was registered by the Bobcats in a 91-58 victory in Athens.
Toledo trailed 74-62 with 6:33 to play but scored 12 straight points to knot the score at 74-74 with
3:47 left. Williams scored the first seven points of the Rockets' run and Boothe's trey brought UT within 74-72. UT tied the score on a pair of Williams' free throws.
After both teams came up empty on their next possession, Kaminski and Navigato traded threes to even the score at 77-77 with 2:47 to play. Simmons knocked down two free throws 17 seconds later and neither team could score until Setty's two free throws with 18 seconds left.
After Navigato missed a three-pointer and grabbed his own rebound, freshman guard
Jaelan Sanford was fouled on a long-distance attempt of his own. He made the first two free throws and missed his third attempt. Junior guard
Jordan Lauf grabbed the offensive board, but Williams' shot for the win was unsuccessful.
Toledo looks to bounce back from tonight's defeat when it hosts Buffalo (11-9, 4-3 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
