TOLEDO, OH – Toledo found success once again at home on Sunday, as the Rockets took down their second Horizon League member in the last three days, defeating Wright State, 1-0. With the shutout victory, the Rockets improve to 3-5-0 on the year.
UT junior
Brooke Maletic scored the match's lone marker in the 85
th minute, as she ripped a shot into the back of the net from just inside the left side of the goal box. Sophomore Isa Echeverri and junior Kierston Johnson were each credited with helpers on the goal, helping the Midnight Blue & Gold earn their blanking in 2015.Â
"The goal from Brooke was a great effort," head coach
TJ Buchholz said. "I'm very proud of her. She is starting to figure out her role on this squad and is heavily contributing to the attack."
The win for Toledo played much differently than Friday. The first 30 minutes saw a slow pace and not many quality chances for either side. Both squads saw five shots in the first half. Senior
Sam Tiongson saved all five chances in the period and ended the match with six stops. Buchholz knows what a strong performance from his senior keeper means for the team.
"Sam is a smart and experience player," Buchholz said. "She's playing outstanding soccer right now and leads the backline well."
The match turned more physical in the second half, and Toledo started to earn more quality chances. After a flurry of shots from the Rockets, Maletic finally found the back of the net for the match winner at 84:06.Â
"The goal and the match was the definition of a Sunday grind," Maletic said. "Today's match is a great confidence booster to push us through next weekend and into Mid-American Conference play."
The Rockets head back on the road for their final non-conference matchup at Northern Kentucky (4-1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
