Toledo Drops Contest at SEC Foe Kentucky

LEXINGTON, KY – Toledo fell behind early and was unable to recover, dropping a 7-0 decision at SEC power Kentucky on Sunday at the Bell Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 1-3 on the year.

The Wildcats (3-1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of action, as Michaela Dooley scored the eventual match winner on assists from Jade Klump and Zoe Swift, and the home team never looked back. 

UK continued to apply much pressure throughout the first half, but UT's defense stood tall and kept the difference 1-0 at the break. Kentucky fired off nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, but Toledo senior goalie Sam Tiongson showed her strength and made multiple athletic saves to keep it a one-goal contest at halftime. 

The Wildcats started the year ranked No. 16 in the country and showed why in the second half. Toledo surrendered another early marker to Zoe Swift within the first four-plus minutes after the intermission. Immediately after the tally, UT had its best scoring opportunity, as sophomore Isa Echeverri fired a shot just high over the frame in the 54th minute. Kentucky quickly countered with goals from Jade Clump and Michaela Dooley in the 60th minute within a span to 45 seconds to put the contest out of reach. Dooley would eventually post a hat trick in the 66th minute.

Junior Nicole Jablonski the came on in place on Tiongson between the posts for the first time this season and played well, rejecting a penalty kick. Unfortunately for Jablonski and Toledo, Kentucky's high-powered offense was still not done attacking and netted two more goals from Allie Gorgol and Sophie Babo to set the final margin at 7-0.

The Rockets will wrap up their season-opening six-match road swing next weekend at No. 10 Pepperdine on Friday, Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m. and Loyola Marymount two days later at 1:00 p.m.
