Toledo Starts Season with 3-2 Victory at Detroit in Double Overtime

DETROIT, MI – Sophomore Isa Echeverri led Toledo to a great comeback and a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Detroit on Friday to begin the 2015 season. Echeverri finished with two goals in the non-league contest at Titan Field, including the match winner in the 102nd minute to help the Rockets start the year 1-0-0.

First-year head coach TJ Buchholz was excited about today's season-opening match ending with a come-from-behind victory.

"This win feels pretty good," said Buchholz, whose team trailed 2-0 early in the second half. "It was an exciting match from beginning to end. Our team talks about these types of moments when you are down, and today they responded very well."

The match started with early pressure from the home team. A quick goal from Sara Zawacki in the seventh minute put the Titans up early and swung the momentum their way.

The Rockets applied solid pressure offensively throughout the opening 45 minutes and held a 6-2 advantage in shots, but they were unable to capitalize on their chances.

The second half started the same way as the first, with a speedy goal from Detroit's Anna Mendling at the 49:19 mark.

As the second period wore on though, Toledo started to find its groove offensively and cut the margin in half in the 58th minute. Senior Geri Siudzinski placed a corner kick into the penalty box and Echeverri headed it into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.

UT's tempo picked up immediately following the goal and helped them earn another marker in the 67th minute. Sophomore Sophie Pohl ripped a beautiful strike from 15 yards out to tie the score. Immediately after the goal, senior goalkeeper Sam Tiongson kept the score tied with an athletic save in the 72nd minute.

Detroit had some chances to regain the lead in the waning moments of regulation, outshooting the Rockets 8-2 in the second half, but the Midnight Blue & Gold stood their ground defensively to force extra soccer. The match ended with each team firing 11 shots at the net.

The scoreboard would be lit up again in the second extra period, as Echeverri scored the "Golden Goal" in a very similar fashion to her first. Off a Siudzinski corner kick, the Colombia native headed the ball into the back of the frame to notch the match-winner.

Echeverri knows and understands what today's come-from-behind victory means for the team.

"We've worked very hard to get to where we are today, and it feels good to start the season with a win," Echeverri said. "Geri found me in overtime on what was almost the same goal as my first."

The Rockets will return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 23 when they travel to nationally ranked Notre Dame. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. and can be seen online at UND.com.

"Today's contest is definitely going to help motivate us for Notre Dame, but now this match is history, and we need to focus on a big challenge against the Fighting Irish," Echeverri said.
