Toledo tallied four home runs in the five-run victory over Miami in Game Two at Scott Park.
The Midnight Blue & Gold enjoyed a power surge against the RedHawks in Game Two as the Rockets tallied four home runs in the five-run win. Junior Ryan Callahan, junior Tyler Baar, freshman Dalton Bollinger and freshman A.J. Montoya each launched a dinger on Saturday.
Sophomore southpaw Steven Calhoun was effective once again for Toledo. The Tipp City, OH native tossed 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Calhoun earned his fifth win of the season.
Junior Ross Achter and senior Andrew Marra entered the game in relief for Calhoun to close out the game for the Rockets. Achter tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out a pair of MU batters. Marra gave up three unearned runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
The RedHawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the second inning following a homer from senior catcher Max Andresen. However, it was all Rockets after that as UT tallied 11 runs combined in the third and fourth inning.
Bollinger got the party started with an RBI single to left field to score freshman Matt Hansen in the bottom of the third. Callahan and Baar followed that up with back-to-back jacks to give Toledo the 5-3 lead. Then, just three batters later, Montoya launched a no-doubt-about-it three-run homer way over the new scoreboard in left center to push the lead to 7-2.
Miami got one back in the top of the fourth but Toledo kept their foot on the gas and added another four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Bollinger mashed his second dinger of the year which also scored junior John Martillotta, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. Later in the inning, junior Lucas Sokol registered an RBI to score Callahan and then Baar reached home following a wild pitch to make it 11-3.
Achter and Marra switched to the game to cruise control until the top of the ninth as MU senior Matt Honchel homered to right center off of Marra to cut the lead to 11-6. Marra rebounded nicely and struck out the next batter to clinch the win.
The Rockets and RedHawks will play a decisive Game Three at Scott Park on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
Prior to first pitch, Toledo will honor its six seniors playing in their final home game. Those seniors are, right handed pitcher Cameron Palmer, third baseman Nate Langhals, right handed pitcher Alec Schmenk, former pitcher and student assistant coach Austin Schmidt, right handed pitcher Adam "Shorty" Tyson and the above mentioned right handed pitcher Andrew Marra. This senior class has combined for 102 wins while donning the Midnight Blue & Gold.Â
