TOLEDO, OH – It was déjà vu for Toledo on Saturday afternoon as the Rockets needed double overtime to put away a pesky Hillsdale College squad. The Rockets' 100-99 triumph marked the second time in three years UT needed more than 40 minutes to defeat the Chargers. In the 2013-14 campaign, UT needed a buzzer-beater from
Julius Brown to notch an 85-84 (OT) victory.
Â
Junior guard
Jonathan Williams paced the Rocket attack with 26 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes. Senior center
Nathan Boothe notched a double-double for UT with 24 points and 12 boards in 41 minutes. Freshman guard
Jaelan Sanford also scored in double figures with 11 points while also dishing out four assists in 32 minutes.
Â
Sophomore
Stuckey Mosley started for UT at point guard and registered nine points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists before fouling out in 35 minutes. He was one of five Rockets to record three or more helpers in the contest.
Â
Toledo also received solid contributions from junior forward
Jordan Lauf (9 pts., 7 reb.), freshman forward
Taylor Adway (6 pts.) and freshman center
Luke Knapke (5 pts., 2 blks.).
Â
Lauf accounted for the game-winning point when he knocked down one of two free throws with 2.9 seconds left.
Â
Hillsdale was led by the GLIAC's Preseason Player of the Year, senior forward Kyle Cooper, who tallied 26 points and game-high 16 boards.
Â
UT trailed for most of the opening half as the Chargers surged to a 17-7 lead in the first four minutes. Williams slammed home a dunk for a 38-37 lead 3:44 before halftime but the visitors took a 43-40 lead to intermission with a 7-2 spurt.
Â
Toledo managed to take its first lead of the second stanza, 57-53, with just over 13 minutes remaining. A Boothe jumper, Adway's reverse layup and back-to-back treys from freshman guard
Nick Rogers and Sanford gave UT a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Â
The Rockets extended their cushion to as many as 12 points (71-59) following Mosley's trey with 7:42 to play. UT led 77-70 with 3:08 left after Mosley found Williams for a back-door layup, but it turned out to be the Midnight Blue and Gold's final points in regulation.
Hillsdale evened the score at 77-all with 22 ticks left after grabbing three offensive boards. Boothe had a chance to win the game but missed two free throws with 2.7 seconds left.
Â
The Rockets led by as many as five points in the first overtime but Cooper's layup tied the score at 84-84 with 29 seconds to play. UT turned the ball over on its final possession, and Hillsdale couldn't convert on a last-second shot.
Â
Toledo started strong again in the second overtime after Lauf's corner trey gave UT a 91-85 lead with 3:02 to play. The Chargers wouldn't go away though and eventually tied the score at 99-99 on three free throws from Stedman Lowry with 14.3 seconds left.Â
