DETROIT – Freshman Otto Black notched his best finish of the season on Friday with a second-place showing at the Detroit Golf Club Invitational. Black carded a one-under par 139 (70-69) in cold, blustery conditions to help Toledo finish tied for third with Eastern Michigan.
Black collected seven birdies on the day and was followed in UT's lineup by sophomore Mike Lancaster, who tied for a career-best 11th place at five-over par 145 (75-70). Sophomore Jamie Richardson (73-74) and freshman Bobby Thomas (79-68) tied for 19th place at seven-over par 147, junior Oliver Holtsberry tied for 26th place at eight-over par 148 (78-70) and sophomore Nate Gonring finished in 39th place at 16-over par 156 (78-78).
Freshman Thomas Shindler competed as an individual and tied for 36th place at 12-over par 152 (80-72).
“It was a tough day out there with the weather conditions,” Head Coach Jamie Broce said. “Otto really played well and he finished strong after some bogeys early in the second round. As a team, I thought we saw some good things and I really liked how we fought through adversity.”
Michigan won the six-team event with a nine-over 709 with each team field six golfers and the top five scores counting. Xavier finished in second place, 13 strokes behind the Wolverines at 22-over par 722. The Rockets and Eagles were tied with identical 25-over par 725 scores. Bowling Green (741) and Dayton (742) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
