Clearwater, FL - The Toledo softball team split its two contests on the opening day of competition in the USF Under Armour Showcase, defeating Canisius 1-0 in the opener, but falling to Long Island, 10-1, in the second game.
The Rockets (5-13, 0-0 MAC) struggled offensively, totaling only 12 combined hits in the contests to go along with only two runs.
In the opening game against Canisius, UT tallied eight hits, holding its opponent to three, and scored the lone run of the outing in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alyssa Smith opened the inning with bunt base-hit, followed by Kristen Roznoski, who also reached first base safely on a bunt. Lani Ernst then drilled a double down the rightfield line to score Smith as the go-ahead and ultimately game-deciding run.
Casi Rohr pitched the majority of the game, recording eight strikeouts and only giving up one hit in six innings of work.

The Rockets' lone run came in the bottom of the second inning, on an RBI-single by Leigh Nebendahl that scored Lindsey Tobias. Tobias led off the inning with a base-hit to centerfield, and subsequently stole second base. Two batters later, Nebendahl singled up the middle, scoring Tobias from second base.
UT plays two contests on Saturday, March 10, facing off with Villanova at 11:30 a.m. and Virginia Tech at 4:15 p.m.
