MUNCIE, IN - Freshman Bobby Thomas tied for 28th place to lead three Toledo golfers participating in Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. The event was held on Monday and Tuesday and played as an individual event with 47 golfers from nine teams competing on the par-70, 6,438-yard layout at Delaware Country Club.
Thomas opened with tournament with a one-over 71 but finished up with a 54-hole total of 17-over par 227 (71-79-77). Also competing for the Rockets were sophomore Nate Gonring (T-35th/77-78-77=232) and freshman Thomas Shindler (T-39th/78-76-81=235).
"This tournament was a good opportunity for me to evaluate Bobby's, Nate's and Thomas' strengths and weaknesses," Toledo Head Coach Jamie Broce said. "Now we can establish a game plan for each of them for what they need to work on over the winter."
Indiana's Kyle Perry earned medalist honors, closing with a round of 67 to finish as the only player in red figures at two-under par 208 (72-69-67).
The teams completed the tournament's second round Tuesday morning and then played the entire third round in the afternoon. Play was stopped Monday night because of darkness, leaving several holes still to play in the second round.
Toledo has now completed four of its five fall events. The Rockets will close out the fall portion of their schedule at the Georgetown Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 22-23 in Beallsville, MD.
