Rockets Prevail in 4-3 Battle with Visiting Buffalo

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team held on to defeat the visiting Buffalo Bulls in the first of two weekend MAC matches at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Thursday afternoon. The Rockets took the doubles point and fought to split singles competition to claim a 4-3 victory and their third-straight decision in conference play.
In doubles action, the Rockets (12-6; 3-1 MAC) managed to claim the bottom two draws and earn the doubles point. The teams of Ashley Frey/Alexandra Cristello and Amanda Border/Silvia Carvajal each won 8-4 at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, to take the point.
Singles play proved to be an intense competition, as each team fought to claim three matches apiece. After Toledo received wins from Polina Guimaraes in the top slot (6-3, 6-2) and Frey at No. 2 (6-3, 7-5), the Bulls claimed matches Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to tie the contest with one match still going. Junior Kelsey Anonsen fought off a late comeback by UB's Golenko in set two and won 6-2, 7-6 to clinch the match for the Rockets.
"Today was a great effort against a fiesty Buffalo team," said Head Coach Tracy Mauntler. "It was a true team effort with players stepping up all throughout the lineup."
The Rockets' three-match win streak will be put to the test on Saturday as they welcome ITA No. 74 and conference foe Akron for another home contest. Weather permitting, the Rockets and Zips will square off at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts for Toledo's first home outdoor contest of the season. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
