Rockets Reign in Singles Play, Down Cleveland State 5-2 to Stretch Win-Streak to Seven

TOLEDO, OH - After losing the doubles point in extremely close fashion, the University of Toledo women's tennis team stormed back in singles play, capturing five of six matches to defeat Cleveland State 5-2 Friday night at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
In the doubles bouts, the No. 1 duo of Polina Guimaraes and Ashley Frey were pushed to the tiebreak, but came away with a 9-8(2) decision as the lone Rocket win. Alexandra Cristello and Kelsey Anonsen pushed their No. 2 match to the tiebreak as well, but Cleveland State prevailed 9-8(4) and won 8-6 at No. 3 to grab the doubles point.
But the Rockets fought back with a vengeance in singles play, taking five of six matches to secure the 5-2 victory. Guimaraes and Frey each won quickly at No. 1 (6-2, 6-0) and No. 2 (6-2, 6-4), respectively, and after losing the No. 3 match with just matches Nos. 4, 5 and 6 remaining the score was locked at two apiece.
At No. 4, Anonsen prevailed in the tiebreak 6-3, 7-6(5) after trailing most of the second set. Cristello and freshman Christine Coffman each dropped their first sets 4-6 at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively to keep the fans at Shadow Valley on edge in search of just one more Rocket win.
The pair each won their second sets to force the matches to a third frame. After being down the entire third set, Coffman staved off two match points and came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Cristello also pulled out a win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to cap of the 5-2 Rocket win.
"I was really proud of the way the team battled back after dropping the doubles point," said Head Coach Tracy Mauntler. "Cleveland State played very well, so taking five of six singles matches was impressive."
The Rockets (7-2) have now won seven straight matches and will look to make it eight on Sunday. Toledo will travel to East Lansing, MI to take on Michigan State at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
