TOLEDO, OH - University
of Toledo Head Men's Basketball Coach Tod
Kowalczyk announced today that 6-6, 235-pound forward Anthony Wright is
transferring to the Rockets' program from the University of Michigan.
Since Wright has already earned his bachelor's degree and has one year of
eligibility remaining, he will be able to pursue his master's degree and
compete for the Rockets in the upcoming 2010-11 campaign.
A Sterling,
VA native, Wright averaged 3.2
points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 84 contests for the Wolverines, including
1.4 ppg and 1.1 rpg in 28 games this past season. He received the Rudy
Tomjanovich Most Improved Player Award as a redshirt freshman after tallying a
career-best 5.1 ppg and 3.3 rpg, highlighted by a career-high 15 points vs. Illinois.
"Anthony will provide us with veteran
leadership which is something we need with the young team we're going to have,"
Kowalczyk said. "He's a player that can give us with some offensive punch, play
out on the perimeter and also help us on the boards with his size."
As a senior in high school, Wright averaged
7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds at Oak
Hill Academy.
During his prep career at Oak Hill (2004-06), he played on teams with Ty Lawson
(Denver Nuggets), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Josh Smith (Atlanta
Hawks) and Rajon Rondo (Boston Celtics).
Wright joins the Rockets' 2010-11
recruiting class that also includes 6-9, 205-pound forward/center Delino Dear (Chicago, IL), 6-4,
205-pound guard Reese Holliday (Kansas City, KS) and 6-1, 180-pound guard J.T. Thomas (New Orleans, LA).
UT is also adding three transfers to its program - 6-2, 200-pound guard
Dominique Buckley from Iowa State, as well as 6-3, 190-pound guard Rian Pearson
and 6-7, 200-pound forward Matt Smith from UW-Green Bay.
