Toledo Manhandles Oakland in Non-League Tilt, 64-36

12/11/2010 3:16:00 AM

TOLEDO, OH - Following a disappointing defensive performance in its last game, Toledo responded to Head Coach Tricia Cullop's challenge and shut down high-powered Oakland en route to a 64-36 victory on Friday at Savage Arena. With the win, the Rockets improve to 5-4 on the season.

The Rockets held the Golden Grizzlies (6-4) to a season-low 36 points on a frigid 22.0 percent (11-of-50) from the field, the second-lowest shooting performance by a UT opponent this season. More impressive, UT restricted the visitors to just one triple in 16 attempts (6.3 percent), another season low. Oakland came into tonight's match-up riding a five-game win streak, averaging 67.1 points on 43.9 percent shooting from the floor and 36.1 percent from beyond the arc.

The Midnight Blue & Gold started the contest with a 15-1 run, including five straight points by senior Jessica Williams and six straight by classmate Melissa Goodall to establish the early double-digit cushion. Oakland would not record its first field goal until its leading scorer, Bethany Watterworth, hit a short jumper at 11:44. OU missed its first eight field-goal attempts and scored its initial point on a free throw by Anna Patritto at the 15:12 mark.

After the home squad began the game with the big run, the teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half and the Rockets took a comfortable 32-16 lead into the intermission. Watterworth had 11 of Oakland's 16 first-half points, including seven straight to end the period. The 16 points allowed was the second-fewest given up by the Rockets in a half this season and the fewest since Saint Peter's scored just eight points on Nov. 30.

Toledo shot an impressive 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field in the first stanza, while holding Oakland to just 29.2 percent (7-of-24). The visitors had no luck from three-point land either, missing all 11 of their attempts. OU's lack of an outside shooting effort, paired with 12 turnovers, helped the Rockets' secure a big halftime lead.

Leading the Rocket scoring effort in the first frame was Goodall with nine points and six boards, along with Williams with eight points.

After exchanging baskets to open the second half, Toledo rattled off a 7-0 run to stretch the margin to 41-20 at the 15:30 mark. Oakland responded with four straight points, but the Rockets came right back with a game-sealing 12-0 burst to give them a convincing 53-24 advantage with 8:30 to play.

Oakland finally found some luck from three-point range with 8:00 to play when Kirstie Malone knocked down a triple to stop Toledo's run, but it was too little too late. Prior to that trey, the Golden Grizzlies were a ghastly 0-for-13 from beyond the arc.

The Rockets emptied their bench down the stretch and outscored Oakland 11-9 over the final six minutes to secure the 28-point home victory.

Goodall paced the victors with 13 points and nine caroms. The 2010-11 team tri-captain has now scored in double figures in every game this season. Three other Rockets finished in double digits as well, including junior Naama Shafir with 10 points and a game-high five assists, redshirt freshman Andola Dortch with 10 points on a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe and Williams with 11 points.

Oakland's two leading scorers on the season, Watterworth (19.7 ppg) and Toledo-native Sharise Calhoun (12.1 ppg) were held to just 13 points and six points, respectively.

The Rockets will have little time to savor this victory, as they return to action on Sunday, Dec. 12 against Big Ten foe Indiana at home. The opening tip is slated for 2:00 p.m. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series, 3-1, and most recently claimed a 73-63 victory on Dec. 22, 2009 in Bloomington. IU has also won the only meeting between the two schools in Toledo, registering a 61-60 triumph in the second round of the Postseason WNIT on March 15, 1998.
