9/30/2007 3:00:00 AM

From staff and wire reports

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo went through three quarterbacks on offense and could not stop Western Michigan's balanced offense in a 42-28 loss to the Broncos at the Glass Bowl Saturday night.

The loss drops Toledo to 1-4, 0-2 in the MAC and puts the Rockets well behind the pack in the race for the MAC West Division title. Western Michigan moves to 2-3, 1-0 in MAC play.

Toledo struck first on a 28-yard pass from sophomore QB Aaron Opelt to junior WR Nick Moore, and took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter when backup QB Clint Cochran recovered a fumbled snap and ran three yards for a TD. But WMU scored twice late in the second quarter to take a 20-14 into the locker room at halftime.

Western Michigan took control of the game in the third quarter with a pair of TDs and iced the game with 4:47 left to play on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Tim Hiller to Jamarko Simmons. Hiller passed for three touchdowns and RB Mark Bonds ran for two to lead the Broncos. Hiller completed 21-of-29 passes for 229 yards with one interception for the Broncos. Bonds rushed for 143 yards on 26 carries, scoring on runs of 2 and 14 yards. The Broncos totaled 261 yards on the ground, with West adding 102 yards on 25 carries. He also had five catches for 51 yards.

Senior Jalen Parmele picked up a season-high 130 yards on 20 rushes for Toledo.

Toledo suffered a blow when opelt left the game in the second quarter with an injury. Cochran, too, was injured in the fourth quarter and was replaced by true freshman D.J. Lenehan.

UT returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 6 against Liberty in its lone remaining non-conference match-up.
