TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (23-21) used the longball to its advantage and blasted a season-high nine home runs in a 19-8 win over IPFW at sunny Scott Park. Five different Rockets belted round trippers to help extend their winning streak to five straight.
Junior Drew Hoisington (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and freshman Aaron Dudley (4-for-5, 3 RBI) led the offensive onslaught with two home runs apiece, while seniors Ryan Laude (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Joel Visser (3-for-5, 3 RBI), juniors Sean Boley (1-for-4, 2 RS, RBI) and Scott Boley (1-for-5, 2 RBI) and sophomore Jake Oester (2-for-4, 2 RBI) each tallied one home run. UT, which scored runs in all but one inning, tied its season high with 19 hits and all nine starters finished with a base hit.
Freshman Jacob Bernath (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win scattering six runs on 11 hits, while striking out four Mastodons in five innings of work. Junior Chris Fields came on in relief and threw the next three frames, before sophomore Brad Eickhoff tossed a scoreless ninth to complete the win.
Toledo three runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third, fourth in the fourth, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the eighth to bring its total to 19. The Mastodons registered four runs in the first, two in the second and two in the seventh, but it would not be enough to hoist them past the Rockets.
IPFW starter Matt Antos (2-5) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in two innings.
The Midnight Blue and Gold return to action tomorrow when they travel to Dayton, OH to battle Wright State. The first pitch from Nischwitz Stadium is slated for 6:30 p.m.
