ATHENS, OH - Toledo pounded out a season-high 19 hits and cruised to an 18-6 victory at Ohio in Sunday's Mid-American Conference series finale at BobWren Stadium. With today's victory, the Rockets complete the three-game sweep of the Bobcats and improve to 10-10 overall, 3-3 in the league.
Nine different Rockets' collected a base against eight Ohio hurlers. Juniors Sean Boley and Jake Swint, along with sophomore Jake Oester pounded out three hits apiece to fuel UT's offense, while senior Joel Visser, juniors Scott Boley and Drew Hoisington and freshman Aaron Dudley had two hits, respectively.
Sophomore Jeff Cinadr (2-0), the second of four UT pitchers, was credited with the victory. Cinadr worked 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and tallied two strikeouts.
For the third-straight game, Toledo scored first and plated five runs on five hits in the third inning. The first three Rockets collected singles off Ohio starter Dan Weiss (2-4) and each came around to score on a bases-clearing double by Hoisington, who finished with a career-best six RBI, down the leftfield line. Hoisington and Scott Boley also tallied runs in the frame following a pair of wild pitches from Weiss and an Ohio error to end the afternoon for the home-team starter.
The Rockets added to their lead with a run in the fifth inning to make the score 6-0. Freshman Tim Krofcheck advanced all the way to second base on an Ohio fielding error and then to third on a wild pitch, before Scott Boley drilled a single up the middle to plate the UT second baseman.
Ohio broke through with its first tally off UT sophomore starter Ryan France in the bottom of the fifth frame. The Bobcats collected three hits in the inning, including a double off the bat of Willie Walker, to end the outing for France. The home team had a chance to further cut into the lead and had the bases loaded with only one out, but Cinadr forced a groundball double play to kill the threat and keep the score at 6-1.
The Midnight Blue and Gold responded to Ohio's run in the previous inning with two runs in the sixth. Toledo pounded out two hits in the frame and was aided by a pair of Bobcat walks. With the base loaded, Hoisington drew a walk to collect his fourth RBI of the afternoon, followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Krofcheck to up the visitors' advantage to 8-1.
Toledo then put the game away in the seventh inning with a season-high nine runs on the strength of seven hits. The first 10 UT batters reached base in the frame against four different Ohio hurlers to make the tally 17-1.
With the game clearly in hand, the Rockets were not done offensively and Hoisington collected his team-best fifth home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Ohio fought hard to the bitter end and utilized two runs in the eighth and three more in its last at-bat to make the final score, 18-6.
The Rockets return to action on Tuesday, April 3 for a non-conference doubleheader against Wayne State at Scott Park. The first pitch of the two seven-inning contests is slated for 2:00 p.m.
