TOLEDO, OH - Junior Drew Hoisington's home run in the eighth inning propelled Toledo to a 9-8 victory over Wayne State. The non-conference tilt is the first game of a doubleheader at Scott Park. Hoisington launched a 1-2 pitch deep over the wall in left field to improve the Rockets to 11-10 on the season.
Junior Mike Ellis (2-1), the fourth hurler utilized by the Midnight Blue and Gold, was credited with the victory. Ellis tossed a pair of scoreless frames of relief to run UT's winning streak to four straight.
All nine UT starters collected a hit off a pair of WSU hurlers, including three round trippers. Juniors Sean Boley and Jake Swint, along with freshman Ryan Satterlee and Hoisington paced the UT offense with two hits apiece.
The Warriors (16-9) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on the strength of three-consecutive two-out hits, including a RBI single by Derek Ranck, to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Rockets were quick to respond with a run of its own in the bottom of the first frame on a RBI single by junior Scott Boley to knot the score at 1-1. UT was aided in its first at-bat by a costly Wayne State error to score the equalizer.
In the second inning, WSU registered a run on a RBI double of Brett Witczak, before UT put up three tallies in the bottom of the frame on run-scoring hits from freshman Aaron Dudley, Hoisington and Sattleree to make the score 4-2.
The Rockets continued to add crooked numbers to the scoreboard and add to their advantage in the third frame on a RBI double by Sean Boley to establish a three-run cushion.
Unfortunately the Midnight Blue and Gold's lead would not last long, as the visitors stayed aggressive at the plate and two runs in each of the next two frames to take a 6-5 advantage. The big hit for Wayne State came in the fourth inning on a two-run home run off the bat of Brett Witczak.
As was the case in the first inning, Toledo responded with a pair runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the advantage, 7-6. UT's Sean Boley provided the damage with a two-run blast, his second round tripper of the season.
The Warriors continued to swing the ball well in the sixth and a two-run double by Tony Hines gave the lead back to the visitors, before UT sophomore Josh Colliver knotted the score for a third time and sent the game into extra innings with a solo home run in the seventh.
The two teams will now take a quick 30-minute break before starting the second game.
