ATHENS, OH - Sophomore RHP Mike Inselmann pitched a four-hit masterpiece over eight innings and helped Toledo claim a 6-4 victory over Ohio in the second game of a three game Mid-American Conference series at Bob Wren Stadium. Inselmann (2-2) recorded a career-best 10 strikeouts and allowed only one run to improve the Rockets to 9-10 overall and 2-3 in the league.
With Inselmann in total control on the hill, junior Scott Boley paced the UT offensive attack with three hits and has totaled six hits in the first two games in the series. Sophomore Josh Colliver also had a big game and finished with two hits and two RBI.
Toledo opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs on the strength of three hits off Ohio starter Zeke Isaacs. Sophomore Jake Oester and Colliver collected RBI's in the frame to give the visitors an early two-run cushion.
Ohio (9-13, 0-5 MAC) promptly cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single off the bat of Hayden Johnston. The home team looked to tie the score at 2-2 on Johnston's run-scoring single up the middle as they had runners on second and third base, but UT centerfielder Drew Hoisington's throw to the plate cutdown Chris Klimko.
The Bobcats were presented another golden opportunity to knot the score at 2-2 in the fifth frame, as they had the bases loaded and only one out, but UT's Inselmann was able to produce a double-play groundout to kill the rally and preserve the one-run lead.
Flirting on two occasions to give up the lead, the Rockets added to their lead in the sixth frame. With one out, Oester drew a walk and promptly stole second base to move into scoring position. Junior Jake Swint then laced a double into the gap in left-center to plate Oester and make the score 3-1.
Toledo added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Colliver, the first of his career, and two more in the ninth on two-run double by freshman Josh Johnson, which extended his hitting streak to 13 games, to establish a five-run lead.
The Bobcats did not go down without a fight in the ninth inning and scored three runs off UT junior reliever Chris Fields to make the game interesting. The home team sent nine batters to the plate in the frame and had the game-tying run at second base, but senior Matt Meinberg recorded a groundout with the bases loaded to preserve the victory and collect his first collegiate save.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m.
