Oxford, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team defeated Miami 4-3 today at Oxford, OH. It was the first time the Rockets have ever beat the RedHawks.
"I'm really proud of the way we fought out there today," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "We showed a lot of heart and the ladies really deserve this win. It's been a long time coming!"
In doubles play, Myriam Cueva and Nadia Zoubareva lost a tough No.1 match, 8-4. Then at No. 2 Martina Wodzinski and Maha Gurigus won 8-5 and the Rockets secured the doubles point when Sarah Horning and Jenny Belsky fought to win a tough match, 9-7.
"The doubles point was key in this match," said Honko. "We've done a great job focusing on doubles in practice and it showed today."
In singles, Cueva, Wodzinski and Gurgius defeated their opponents pretty handily. At No. 5 Jenny Belsky fought through another tough before losing 7-6(2), 6-7 (3), 10-5.
Toledo will continue its weekend of conference play by traveling to Muncie, IN to take on Ball State at 1:00 p.m. The Rockets are 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
