EVANSVILLE, IN - Sophomore Mike Inselmann (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts to lead Toledo to a 6-4 victory over Chicago State at the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic at Braun Stadium. With the victory, the Rockets improve to 2-0 on the season.
Junior Drew Hoisington (2-for-4) was the only UT player with a multi-hit effort.
After spotting the Cougars a two-run lead in the bottom of the third, UT cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning without the luxury of a hit. Senior Ryan Laude drew a one-out walk, sophomore Josh Colliver reached on an infield error and classmate Jake Oester collected a walk to load the bases. Laude came around to score following a wild pitch on the very next batter and make it a 2-1 game. Unfortunately, the Rockets were not able to tally any additional runs as their next two batters struck out to end the rally.
With Inselmann in control on the mound, UT captured the lead for good in the sixth frame on a two-run home run to left-center by junior college transfer Nate McKeon.
Two innings later, it was McKeon again with a RBI to push the Rockets' lead to 4-2.
Junior Scott Boley collected a RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to finish UT's offensive attack and put the Midnight Blue and Gold comfortably ahead, 6-2.
The Rockets brought in last year's save leader Joe Roberts in the ninth to shut the door on the Cougars. The senior struggled with his control early on and hit two of the first three batters he faced. He also gave up a single to load the bases, before the Ottawa Lakes, MI native produced a double play ball, but a run scored as well to make it a 6-3 contest. The next batter singled to left-center to drive in another run, before Roberts recorded the final out to secure the two-run victory.
UT was scheduled to play two games today, but its contest scheduled for this morning against the host Purple Aces was eliminated due to wet field conditions.
The Rockets return to action next weekend, March 2-4, when they travel to Shreveport, LA for a three-game series with Centenary. The first pitch on Friday from Shehee Stadium is slated for 5:00 p.m., while the other two days action will start at 1:00 p.m.
