SHREVEPORT, LA - Toledo suffered its first loss of the 2007 season this evening with a 9-1 setback to Centenary College at Shehee Stadium. The Rockets (2-1) were limited to three singles against two Gents hurlers.
The home team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off UT junior Kyle Rawlings (1-1). CC tallied only one hit in the frame and was aided by two costly Toledo errors.
The Rockets scored their lone run in the third as a result of a Gents error. Freshman Tim Krofcheck led off the inning and advanced to second base on an infield throwing error. Junior Jake Swint then perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to move Krofcheck at third base, before he touched the plate on a sacrifice fly by senior Joel Visser.
The one tally would be the only offense the Rockets could generate on the evening. UT advanced only two runners into scoring position the rest of the contest.
Centenary (7-9) quickly responded with three runs of its own in the fourth to end the outing for Rawlings and put the game out of reach.
The Gents then finished off the scoring with three runs in the seventh and another tally in the eighth to make the final, 9-1.
Brandon Fulenchek (3-1) picked up his third win of the season in six innings of work, while David McElroy threw the final three frames in relief to collect his first save of the 2007 season.
The Rockets continue the three-game series against the Gents on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
