Cleveland, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team finished off its non-conference schedule with a convincing 5-2 win at Cleveland State on Sunday. The Rockets improve to 12-7 with the win.
The Rockets were missing two top players, as sophomore Chris Clark was forced to sit out due to the limited number of dates an athlete can play. Senior Tony Tran also was limited to only doubles due to sickness.
Toledo had no problem, sweeping the doubles matches. Freshman Jared Miller fit in seamlessly with his new partern, freshman Wade Ward, winning 8-6 at third doubles.
Toledo continued to play well in singles without two of its top players. Miller moved up two flights to the second position and won easily, 6-1, 6-0. Travis Curran got a gritty win at third singles, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 10-6. Josh Moran and Cristobal Toral finished the Vikings off with wins at fourth and fifth singles, respectively.
"Our entire non-conference schedule we were able to rotate guys in and out of the lineup, which is a great luxury to be able to do that against Division I team," Head Coach Al Wermer said. "Our guys played hard today without two of our usual players. We've been able to give lots of guys opportunities to play and they've responded nicely in all of our matches."
The Rockets open up Mid-American Conference play this weekend as it hosts Buffalo at 1 P.M. on Sunday, tentatively scheduled to take place at Varsity Courts. In case of inclement weather, the match will be played at Laurel Hill.
