Toledo Wins Two of Three Weekend Matches in Kentucky

Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo won two of its three matches this weekend in the state of Kentucky to improve to 7-5 on the season. The Rockets played two matches at Eastern Kentucky, defeating Indiana State 5-2, before defeating the host Colonels 5-2. On Sunday, the Rockets fell at #19 Kentucky 6-1.
The Rockets started out in Richmond, KY on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Indiana State at a neutral site. The Rockets dropped the top two singles flights, but were able to sweep the doubles matches and the lower singles flights.
In its second match of the day on Saturday, UT defeated the host Colonels 5-2. Once again, the Rockets swept the doubles matches, including a tough 9-8 win by Chris Clark and Jared Miller at third doubles. UT then got back on the winning track at the top singles flights, as Mohammed Al Nabhani won at first singles 7-6, 6-1 and Clark won a tough three-set match at second singles 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.
In its final match of the weekend in Lexington, KY on Sunday evening, the Rockets fell to the 19th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats 6-1. The Rockets played well against tough competition in a match that lasted until 10:30 P.M., but only Tony Tran at third singles could come away with a win (6-2, 6-2).
"Our guys showed a lot of spirit and spunk this weekend," Head Coach Al Wermer said. "The UK match was a carnival atmosphere on a few fronts."
Toledo returns home next weekend to Laurel Hill Tennis Club to host three matches. On Friday evening, the Rockets battle Duquesne at 7 P.M., before taking on DePaul at 2:30 P.M. and IUPUI at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday.
