Bowling Green, OH - The University of Toledo softball team split its doubleheader against Bowling Green today (March 27). The Rockets (15-13, 1-3 MAC) took the first game by a 2-1 margin, but could not overcome the Falcons' (8-16, 1-1 MAC) hot hitting and suffered a 6-2 defeat in the second game. Sophomore Stephanie Moore (6-6) captured the win for UT in a complete game showing, while senior Kim Pettitt (9-7) earned her third loss of the weekend. BG's Vrabel (5-7) sustained through two complete games to pick up one win and one loss for the Falcons.
It was a pitchers dual in game one, as Moore allowed a mere five hits while striking out four batters. BG's Vrabel allowed three hits, but the Rockets were able to capitalize on those hits and produce two runs.
UT's first run came in the top of the fifth when freshman 1B Leslie Stong connected for her fourth home run of the season. The Falcons tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Vallas took Moore deep into left field for a solo home run. But that wasn't the end of the home run battle, as junior transfer C Jennifer Susman led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot that would seal Bowling Green's fate in game one (2-1). Susman finished the game 2-for-2 with one RBI.
The Falcons bats came alive in the second game, connecting on 11 hits for six runs compared to the Rockets five hits for two runs. BG's 3B Rango finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3 showing with three RBI and one walk. The Rockets were led offensively by freshman Valerie Moxim, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI and a walk.
Up next, the Rockets will travel to Miami on Wednesday, March 30, for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
