Oxford, OH - Toledo (15-14, 1-4 MAC) dropped its first game against Miami (14-15, 2-2 MAC), 3-1, only to suffer a twelve-inning 2-1 defeat in game two at the Miami Softball Field today (March 30). The RedHawks senior LHP Jackie Poggendorf (8-9) claimed both wins for Miami, while senior Kim Pettitt (9-8) earned the first loss of the day, and sophomore Stephanie Moore (6-7) picked up the second. Despite Pettitt's loss, the Canton, OH native moved herself up to third on Toledo's All-Time Career Records list with 401 strikeouts. She surpassed Christian Chadwick's 1989-92 career total of 399.
In game one, the RedHawks jumped out quickly off a double from freshman RF Christine Bills that scored two and put Miami up, 2-0.
The Rockets had trouble connecting for a hit against Miami's Poggendorf for the first three innings. Freshman 1B Leslie Stong broke the Rockets' curse in the top of the fourth, beating out her bunt to third base for a single. Junior SS Gina Muratori moved Stong along with a single past the third baseman. Both runners would move into scoring position off of a wild pitch, but were stranded as Pettitt struck out for the final out of the inning.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Stong stepped up to the plate and knocked a shot down the right field line for her first triple of the season. A sacrifice hit to the second baseman by senior 2B Kris Shultz would plate the Rockets' first run of the game, and pull them to within one.
However, Miami added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning that would seal UT's fate for game one of the twinbill, 3-1. With two down, the RedHawks' freshman Jessica Moore hit a double into left center scoring pinch runner freshman Breanna Robinson.
Poggendorf (7-9) held the Rockets to a mere four hits while fanning nine batters in her eighth complete game of the season. Pettitt (9-8) earned her fourth loss against MAC competitors with her complete game showing. Stong led the Rockets at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, including UT's lone run.
Stephanie Moore found herself in the middle of a pitcher's dual for the second time in as many weeks during game two. Moore pitched her 10th complete game of the season, allowing 10 hits while hurling a total of 11.1 innings and facing 44 batters. Miami's starting pitcher junior Courtney Salmon held the Rockets to five hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters in 6.2 innings of work before retiring the game to Poogendorf in the middle of the seventh.
In a scoreless game going into the 12th inning, daylight started to fade and the game moved into international tie-breaker rules where a runner is placed at second base to begin the inning. The Rockets started off the top of the 12th inning with sophomore Erica Singer on second and junior Jennifer Susman up to bat. Susman hit a sacrifice bunt to move Singer to third. Singer scored on a single by freshman Valerie Moxim into center field for the first run of the game. UT ended the inning with two runners stranded.
The Redhawks would capitalize on Toledo's only three errors of the game to plate two runs to end the game, 2-1. The first UT error occurred during the first batter, when Kris Shultz could not pick up the throw from Moore off of a bunt. That would place RedHawks on first and third. Miami's Popson hit a ringer to freshman 3B Brittany Robbins, who was able to knock it down but could not complete the play placing `Hawks at all bases. An error by SS Gina Muratori would score Miami's first run to tie the game, 1-1. With bases still loaded, the RedHawks' Moore hit a grounder to Muratori, who bobbled the ball just long enough for Maxey to slide home safely for the 2-1 win.
The Rockets were led by Moxim, V. and Robbins at the plate, who both went 2-for-4.
Up next, Toledo will host its conference home opener against Ball State on Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3. The first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to be at 1:00 p.m.
