Toledo, OH - Toledo (17-29) registered its fourth doubleheader sweep of the season today with a pair of non-conference victories (2-1, 10-2) over IPFW (6-29-1) at Scott Park. The Rockets' 17 wins this season are their most since the 2001 campaign.
The Rockets won a tightly-played contest in the opener thanks to the strong pitching from junior Kim Pettitt (6-17), who yielded just one unearned run and three hits in seven innings.
UT took advantage of an IPFW error in the opening frame to plate their first run. Freshman RF Denise Van Vossen drilled a one-out double down the left-field line and junior C Jessica Horn reached with two out on 2B Kari Butler's throwing error. Van Vossen scored when Horn was caught in a rundown trying to steal second base.
The Mastodons tallied an unearned run of their own in the second when CF Heather Devore reached after freshman CF Erica Singer dropped her fly ball in the swirling winds. Devore advanced to second on Horn's errant pick-off attempt and scored on a two-out triple by SS Korin Maciulski.
The Rockets plated the game-winning run with two out in the second inning when Singer's RBI double to left-center field scored junior 2B Kristina Schultz.
Toledo fell behind 2-0 early in the nightcap before getting on the board thanks to some daring baserunning. Singer led off the bottom of the third with a walk and stole second and third base and scored on a throwing error by C Kacie Stone.
UT took control of the contest by exploding for seven runs in the fourth inning highlighted by freshman C Tracy Lehman's two-run single to give the Rockets a 3-2 advantage. Twelve batters came to the plate with sophomore LF Audrina Marler, sophomore SS Gina Muratori and senior 2B Vicki Nelson also collecting RBIs.
Toledo ended the contest in the fifth frame on Singer's RBI double and a bases-loaded walk to freshman pinch-hitter Lyndsey Greer.
Freshman Stephanie Moore evened her win-loss mark at 10-10 with the victory, allowing one unearned run in three innings of work.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow a non-conference doubleheader at Cleveland State. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
