Muncie, IN - Toledo (15-29, 3-13 MAC) split its doubleheader (8-6 W, 2-0 L) this afternoon at Ball State (13-31, 5-9 MAC) thanks to rallying from a 6-1 deficit in the opener.
Freshman Stephanie Moore improved her record to 9-10 in the Game 1 win despite allowing 13 hits and six runs (three earned) in seven innings.
After falling behind 6-1 after four innings, the Rockets exploded for three runs on four hits in the top half of the fifth inning. Sophomore RF Audrina Marler began the rally with a one-out single, setting up back-to-back doubles by Denise Van Vossen and Gina Muratori and then another single by Kate Moxim. Marler, Van Vossen and Muratori all scored in the inning as the Rockets got within two at 6-4.
Toledo tied the contest in the sixth inning thanks to junior 3B Amy Morris' leadoff homer over the center-field fence and Van Vossen's RBI fielder's choice.
The Cardinals got two runners on base -- Mandy Snyder and Taylor Yancey -- on back-to-back singles with two outs in the sixth, but Moore knocked down a hard groundball hit back at her by Kelli Jeziorski to get out of the inning.
The Rockets took over the lead in the seventh on freshman 1B Tracy Lehman's sacrifice fly and added an insurance marker thanks to a Cardinal error.
Ball State tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Cortney Patteson walked and then moved to second on a single by Alyssa Huffman. Kerrie Campbell sent a smashing shot back at the mound but the ball ricocheted off Moore into the hands of Lehman who tagged Campbell for the final out.
The second game saw the Rockets limited to just one hit as Randi Freese (6-13) and Quincy Duran combined for the shutout. Lehman registered UT's lone hit with a single in the second inning. Junior Kim Pettitt (5-17) suffered the loss, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings.
Kris Burdine scored Ball State's first run in the third inning after walking, advancing to second on a bunt single by Snyder, to third on an infield single by Yancey and home as the result of a fielding error on Britni Clark's hard groundball to the shortstop.
The Cardinals struck again in the sixth after Crystal Newton singled with two outs down the left-field line and was then plated by Burdine's triple to right-center field, giving BSU the final 2-0 margin of victory.
Toledo returns to action on Tuesday, April 27 with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader vs. IPFW at Scott Park. The twinbill was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 30 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
