Rochester, MI - Toledo (14-24) registered an impressive doubleheader sweep (5-1, 4-0) this afternoon at Oakland (9-30) to extend its winning streak to a season-high four games. All four of the Rockets' victories have come on the road marking the program's first four-game road winning streak since March 29-30, 1996.
Junior Kim Pettitt (5-14) fired a one-hit shutout in the nightcap and allowed just one ball to be hit into the outfield, a single to left by Christina Schulte with two out in the fourth inning. She retired the first 11 batters she faced and struck out the side in the second and third innings en route to fanning a season-high nine batters.
The Rockets gave Pettitt all the runs she needed in the second inning without the benefit of a base hit. Junior 2B Kristina Schultz walked to lead off the frame and advanced to second base on freshman 1B Tracy Lehman's sacrifice. She scored after stealing third base and Oakland C Danielle Shamus' throw sailing into left field.
Toledo extended its advantage to 3-0 in the fifth inning on junior LF Kate Moxim's RBI groundout and freshman RF Denise Van Vossen's RBI single up the middle.
UT tallied its final run in the seventh on senior Vicki Nelson's one-out double to left field following Muratori's second triple of the game to lead off the inning.
In the first game, freshman Stephanie Moore hurled a four-hitter in the Rockets' 5-1 victory to even her record at 8-8.
The Rockets opened the scoring in the second when freshman LF Michelle Carlson drew a bases-loaded walk to score junior 3B Amy Morris. Morris increased UT's lead when she drilled an RBI triple to right field and scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 advantage after three innings.
After the Golden Grizzlies narrowed UT's lead to 3-1 in the fourth, the Rockets put the game away with two runs in the fifth. Freshman CF Erica Singer's single to right field plated junior C Jessica Horn and Schultz came across on an Oakland error.
Morris and sophomore SS Gina Muratori paced the Rockets' 10-hit attack in the first game with two hits apiece. In the second game, sophomore 3B Audrina Marler led the way with two of UT's eight hits.
Toledo returns to action on Wednesday, April 21 at Scott Park with a MAC doubleheader vs. Ohio (12-23, 6-6 MAC). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
