KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Mike Williams scored a game-high 30 points, one shy
of his career record, and had a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Western Michigan
to an 89-62 win over Toledo on Wednesday night.
Western senior center Anthony Kann added 21 points and 10 rebounds for the
Broncos, who defeated Toledo for the third straight time and won their 16th
consecutive home game. The victory moved the Broncos (19-3, 12-2 Mid-American)
within one win of their first MAC West championship since 1998.
Florentino Valencia led Toledo (16-7, 10-5) with 14 points. It was the third
loss in four games for the Rockets, the only team with a mathematical shot at
catching Western.
The teams meet again Feb. 28 at Toledo.
The game featured the two leading candidates for MAC Player of the Year, but
Williams, a senior forward, outshone Toledo guard Keith Triplett.
Williams, the conference's third-leading scorer, had his sixth double-double
of the season, as well as a game-high three steals and a blocked shot.
Triplett, entering the game with a 19.7 points-per-game scoring average,
scored eight points on 3-of-10 shooting - only his third game in single figures
this season.
The Rockets missed all seven of their second-half 3-point attempts. Western
held a 46-33 rebounding advantage.
