WINTER PARK, FL - The Toledo baseball team committed nine errors Monday night and eventually fell to Rollins College, 10-6, in the first day of the Rollins College Invitational. The Rockets are now 2-2 on the season.
"I was pretty pleased with our pitching effort tonight," Kruzel said. "They kept us in the ballgame only giving up four earned runs, but our defense really let us down, which is very uncharacteristic of them. When you make that many errors very seldom to do give yourself a chance to win. Our defense really hurt else and we need to sharpen up."
UT sophomore Todd Thomas (0-1) was credited with the loss, while Eduardo Chile earned his first win of the season for the Tars.
Toledo exploded to start off the game scoring four runs on three hits, including a double by junior Shawn Hurst to drive in two runs in the first. Toledo took a 4-0 advantage over the Tars going into the bottom of the inning.
Rollins' cut into the Toledo lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Mike Reese led-off with a solo home run to left center.
The Rockets widened the gap in the second, scoring another two runs on four hits. Chile came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs and retired UT junior Jarrod Resendez to end the inning with Toledo holding a 6-1 advantage.
Rollins cut into the deficit in the fourth inning with a three-run homer to left center to pull within two, 6-4. The Tars eventually caught and surpassed the Rockets scoring three more runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. The Rockets did not help their own cause committing four errors in the inning.
Rollins pulled away in the seventh, scoring two insurance runs with the aid of two more Toledo errors and added another run in the eighth to make the final, 10-6.
