Ypsilanti, MI- Toledo broke open a close game with 52 unanswered points in a 65-13 thrashing of Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Toledo had 510 yards in total offense and punted just once. The Rockets were aided by five interceptions that led to four of their touchdowns.
The 65 points is the third-highest total in school history and the most ever for Toledo in a Mid-American Conference game. Toledo led at halftime, 48-13. The 48 first-half points tied the school record for most points set in a half.
Toledo (2-0, 1-0 MAC) moved the ball efficiently on offense throughout the entire game, but it was the five interceptions that made the difference in the game. Senior linebacker David Gardner and redshirt freshman defensive back Keon Jackson each had two interceptions. Jackson returned one of his picks for a 23-yard touchdown during a furious second-quarter rally that saw UT score four touchdowns.
Toledo scored almost immediately, as Gardner picked off a Jeff Crooks' pass that was deflected by senior linebacker Tom Ward and returned it foru yards to the EMU 19. Two plays later, senior tailback William Bratton picked up a fumbled exchange and plowed in for a three-yard touchdown.
After a missed EMU field goal attempt, Toledo hit paydirt again in just four plays, culminating with a 15-yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman Trinity Dawson.
Eastern Michigan (0-2, 0-1 MAC) rallied, however, scoring a pair of first quarter TDs to knot the score at 13-13. From there, however, the rest of the game belong to Toledo.
Sophomore wide receiver ran 58 yards after catching a short pass from quarterback Brian Jones to make the score 20-13 with 1:07 to play in the first quarter. UT followed up with four unanswered scores in the second quarter to take a commanding 48-13 halftime lead. From there the Rockets cruised to their 25th victory in their last 28 games, going back to the last three games of the 1999 season.
As in Toledo's 44-16 home-opening win over Cal Poly last week, the Rocket offense was balanced. Toledo had 303 yards rushing and 207 yards passing. True freshman Astin Martin (83 yards) led four running backs with at least 68 yards rushing. Bratton added 77 yards and one touchdown (all in the first half), true freshman Quinton Broussard had 69 yards and two TDs and Dawson had 68 yards and one score.
Jones was 8-of-12 passing for 166 yards and one TD. Sophomore Cedric Stevens was 3-of-5 for 41 yards one score. Senior Carl Ford led all receivers with four receptions for 68 yards.
Toledo next plays at Minnesota on Sept. 14. The Rockets defeated Minnesota in Toledo last year, 38-7.
