MUNCIE, IN - The University of Toledo baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead this afternoon, before Ball State scored 15-straight runs on its way to a 16-6 victory to complete the four-game sweep of the Rockets at the Ball Diamond.
With today's loss, the Rockets fall to 4-16, 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference, while the Cardinals improve to 14-11, 6-2 in the MAC.
The Cardinals tallied five home runs including a grandslam in the sixth inning.
Things looked good for the Midnight Blue and Gold early as they plated three runs in the top of the third on RBI by sophomore right fielder Jarrod Resendez, junior first baseman Phil Pilewski and senior third baseman Mike Meinhart. BSU rallied, though, for six runs in the bottom-half of the inning, five runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth. In all, 11 of the Cardinals 16 runs were scored off home runs. Five different batters played long-ball for BSU in today's win.
All eight UT starters collected a base hit, including two hits apiece from junior second baseman Taylor Eckel, Pilewski and junior designated hitter Roger Hernandez
Designated hitter Andy Metzler led the BSU offense going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.
On the mound, UT junior Brian Kovacs (0-3) suffered the loss, while BSU's Brian Lynch recorded his first win of the season (1-2) by throwing five innings and giving up nine hits and three runs.
The Rockets will look to turn things around on Tuesday, April 9, when they return home to battle Bethel College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
