Oxford, OH - Toledo (6-14, 0-3 MAC) split its doubleheader this afternoon at Miami (6-23, 0-3 MAC) by posting a 1-0 victory in the nightcap after dropping a 2-0 decision in the opener. The games did not count in the conference standings.
Senior Colette McMasters earned the win for the Rockets by limiting the RedHawks to just two hits in her complete-game effort.
UT plated the game's lone run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by junior LF Jenny Schaaf.
The Rockets nearly scored in the fourth inning when senior RF Kalika Stavroulakis led off with a triple down the rightfield line. Freshman 3B Crystal Rizzuto then hit a hard grounder to Miami second baseman Jessica Zogaib, who threw out Stavroulakis at home plate. Freshman C Jessica Horn then lashed a double to the right-centerfield gap, but the relay from sophomore right fielder Jamie Carey to Zogaib to junior catcher Erin Kucera nailed Rizzuto at the plate.
The RedHawks attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but came up just short. Freshman Jackie Poggendorf sliced a one-out triple down the leftfield line was stranded there as two successive groundouts to third base ended the game.
In the opener, Poggendorf put the RedHawks up 1-0 in the second when she led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a groundout and scored on a fielding error by freshman shortstop Jennifer Mielke.
Miami scored again in the fourth on a RBI double down the leftfield line by senior Nicki Pelfrey.
Poggendorf yielded four hits and struck out eight to earn her MAC-best sixth win.
Toledo is scheduled to return to action this weekend when it hosts Western Michigan in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 at Scott Park.
