MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) - Chester Taylor tied a stadium record with a career-high five touchdowns as Toledo beat Central Michigan, 52-28, on Saturday in the
Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
Taylor ran for 164 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. He addeded another score on a 43-yard pass play from Tavares bolden to open the scoring on Toledo's first possession of the game. Taylor's five TDs tied the school record held by Gib Stick, Joe Schwartz and Casey McBeth. He matched the Kelly/Shorts Stadium record held by former Chippewa players Brian Pruitt and Rodney Stevenson.
The Rockets (3-0, 1-0) took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of
touchdowns by Taylor. The Chippewas cut the deficit to 14-7 at the 11:04 mark
of the second quarter when Torey Humphrey grabbed a 50-yard pass from Derrick
Vickers following a blocked punt.
Central (1-2, 0-1) didn't get any closer the rest of the game as Toledo
scored the next 17 points, including a 19-yard touchdown gallop by Taylor.
Taylor scored two of Toledo's three touchdowns in the third quarter on runs
of 2 and 37 yards to finish the Rockets' scoring, while Central added two more
scores on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Derek Gorney to Hill and a 9-yard run
by Terrence Jackson.
Toledo's Tavares Bolden threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 13-of-22
passing. He also ran for two scores, including a 52-yard run in the third
quarter.
