Baseball Sweeps Marshall in Doubleheader

TOLEDO, OH - Sophomore 1B Phil Pilewski slugged four homers today to lead Toledo (17-13, 5-3 MAC) to a doubleheader sweep (10-9, 10-6) over Marshall (14-13, 3-3 MAC). The two victories extend the Rockets' winning streak to four games.

In the opener, Pilewski hit three homers, including the game-winning blast leading off the eighth inning.

The Rockets rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the contest to take a 9-7 lead into the seventh and final inning. But the Herd's Jason Ricceri and Jason Brooks each connected for solo shots (their second of the game) to tie the contest.

A total of 11 home runs were hit in the first game with junior CF Tony Miller and junior RF Jay Juras each hitting a homer for UT in addition to Pilewski.

The two victories extend the Rockets' winning streak to four games. Sophomore P Mike DeLong (2-0) earned the victory in relief after throwing 1.2 innings of hitless relief.

In the second game, the Rockets jumped out on top with a five-run first. Senior LF Andy Stetka led off the game with a blast to center field. After a walk to Miller, junior 3B Mike Meinhart singled Miller to third. Pilewski followed with an RBI single. Juras then walked to load the bases. Sophomore DH Roger Hernandez followed with a two-run single and redshirt freshman C Mike Meridieth capped the inning's scoring with an RBI single.

Marshall answered back with a four-run second to reduce the Rockets' lead to single run.

UT then put the game away in the fifth when Pilewski started things off with a solo homer for his fourth roundtripper of the day. Freshman 2B Chris Arvay added to the Rockets' scoring with a two-run single and the inning's final two runs scored on a Herd error.

Freshman P Nick Szczur (2-2) hurled his third complete game to earn the victory. He did not walk any Marshall batters and fanned nine.

Toledo will be in action again at Scott Park on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of non-conference games vs. Wayne State beginning at 2:00 p.m.
