TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo men's basketball program will compete in 29 games over the course of its 2000-01 season, highlighted by appearances in two tournaments in addition to a matchup versus perennial power Cincinnati in the Rock-N-Roll Shootout on Dec. 30 at Cleveland's Gund Arena.
The Rockets' home schedule includes games vs. Detroit (Nov. 29), George Mason (Dec. 2), Oakland (Dec. 16) and Xavier (Dec. 23) in addition to their nine-game Mid-American Conference slate.
"I'm excited about our non-conference home schedule with four games against quality opposition," UT Head Coach Stan Joplin said. "It's a very competitive schedule and will help prepare us for conference play. It's going to be a challenging season for us right from the start."
UT opens its campaign vs. Southeast Missouri State at the Mountain Energy Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City, MO on Friday - Sunday, Nov. 24-26. Other teams competing in the tournament are Auburn, Cleveland State, Creighton, UMKC, Providence and Robert Morris.
UT's remaining non-conference schedule includes a road game vs. St. Bonaventure (Dec. 9) and an appearance in Fresno State's Trend Homes Classic (Dec. 19-20), a field which includes the host Bulldogs, Louisiana-Lafayette and Samford.
The difficulty of the Rockets' schedule is evidenced by the fact that 12 teams participated in 2000 post-season play. Auburn, Ball State, Cincinnati, Creighton, Fresno State, Louisiana-Lafayette, St. Bonaventure, Samford, Southeast Missouri State each qualified for the NCAA Tournament, while Bowling Green, Kent State and Xavier appeared in the NIT.
The Rockets, who have captured at least a share of the last two Mid-American Conference West Division titles, will play each of their West Division foes twice throughout the regular season, as well as rival Bowling Green. UT will play the remaining East Division schools once, with Kent State, Miami, and Ohio visiting Savage Hall and the Rockets traveling to Akron, Buffalo and Marshall.
